Subheading: Even the Styrian writer Peter Rosegger, who was born close to the SANDICCA sea buckthorn gardens, could never have dreamed of this. Already in their fifth year, the sea buckthorn bushes originally from Nepal are blossoming in Austria’s first plantation of its kind, in the Styrian Joglland, creating a natural spectacle. It is that time again! The approximately 6,000 sea buckthorn bushes will be in full bloom over the next 10 days and can be visited at any time.
A true power fruit is growing here in eastern Styria. Sea buckthorn withstands barren soils, captures the sunlight and bravely faces every challenge with its sharp thorns.
Sea buckthorn fruit formation
The sea buckthorn plant is dioecious and consists of female and male bushes. For the berries to form, the female plant must be pollinated by the flower pollen of the male plant. Since pollination occurs by wind, fertilisation depends on favourable pollen dispersal.
The flower buds form every year between the beginning of the growing season and midsummer, together with the vegetative buds, and open in the spring of the following year. Both the female and male flower buds open approximately 7 days before leaf formation begins. This is when very small yellowish flowers appear, usually before the leaves in mid-April. Both the female and male flowers are remarkably small.

SANDICCA: The Styrian company SANDICCA was founded in 2017 by Ing. Tanja Kroisleitner. On around 2.7 hectares of cultivation area, approximately 6,000 organic-quality sea buckthorn bushes now thrive in the Styrian SANDICCA sea buckthorn gardens. Originally from Nepal, sea buckthorn is now considered an attractive superfood. In 2017, 2.3 tonnes of sea buckthorn berries were harvested for the first time. SANDICCA therefore has Austria’s only sea buckthorn plantation and is looking for farmers for organic contract cultivation.
