Editorial: During the cold autumn and winter months, the orange sea buckthorn berry protects against colds with its high vitamin C content. This autumnal wild fruit has been available since 2017 as a regional vitamin powerhouse under the Austrian SANDICCA® brand in pharmacies and in its own online shop. Particularly popular is the naturally produced SANDICCA sea buckthorn pulp oil as a natural antioxidant. It contains the polyunsaturated omega fatty acids 7 and 9, as well as vitamin E and beta-carotene – provitamin A. Plant-based omega-3 fatty acids are found in unusually high concentrations in sea buckthorn seed oil, which is obtained in Joglland through innovative supercritical CO2 extraction, cold and completely residue-free. Find out more on the 1st Sea Buckthorn Day, on 27 October in Wenigzell.

Harvest in the SANDICCA sea buckthorn gardens: Longitude: 15.798688, Latitude: 47.451235

From Friday, 14 September to Sunday, 16 September, the bright orange sea buckthorn berries and leaves are harvested in the SANDICCA® sea buckthorn gardens. Harvesting this superfood is generally difficult, as the bright orange sea buckthorn berries are protected by the thorns that give the plant its name. The berries can burst if handled carelessly, while the thorns pose a risk of injury. Therefore, in Styria’s Joglland, too, a harvesting method is used in which the fruit-bearing branches are cut off and deep-frozen. The berries and leaves can then be easily shaken off the branches and stored until further processing.

Active compound complex of sea buckthorn pulp oil

With SANDICCA® sea buckthorn pulp oil, Austria now has regionally produced polyunsaturated omega fatty acids for the first time. As part of the overall active compound complex, together with vitamin E—a collective term for fat-soluble substances with antioxidant effects—and the vitamin A precursor beta-carotene, these can make an exceptionally valuable contribution to a healthy foundation for life. In addition, sea buckthorn contains more than 190 bioactive substances and offers one of the widest selections of nutrients from a single source, including antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, omega fatty acids, carotenoids and phytosterols, which are of considerable importance to the human body.

Sea buckthorn pulp oil in space travel and aroma care

The orange sea buckthorn pulp oil has a long tradition and has been scientifically researched worldwide. It serves as a protective and nourishing oil for stressed skin. It is also known as a radiation protection oil, as it increases the skin’s resistance to radiation. The oil gained particular importance in Russia. Its effects were therefore also specifically researched in space travel, where radiation exposure is elevated. Sea buckthorn pulp oil also has a highly regenerative and soothing effect on the skin and mucous membranes, which is why doctors and pharmacists prescribe it as an accompaniment during radiation and chemotherapy, for internal and external use.

Trained aroma practitioners also use sea buckthorn pulp oil intensively as an active oil in skincare, as sun protection and to support skin regeneration in cases of burns, poor wound healing and generally sensitive skin.

SANDICCA:

The Styrian company SANDICCA® was founded in 2017 by Ing. Tanja Kroisleitner. Around 6,000 organic-quality sea buckthorn shrubs now thrive on approximately 2.7 hectares of cultivated land in the Styrian SANDICCA sea buckthorn gardens. Originally from Nepal, sea buckthorn is now considered one of the most attractive superfoods. In 2017, 2.3 tonnes of sea buckthorn berries were harvested in Styria for the first time. This means that SANDICCA® has Austria’s first sea buckthorn plantation and has already contracted additional farmers. In the coming years, around 6 hectares of organic sea buckthorn will be cultivated in Styria and processed into innovative food supplements. This provides farmers with an attractive source of income and creates value in rural areas. Ready for anything – with SANDICCA.
