Vitamin D3 – to strengthen your immune system

Part 2 – for your strong immune system

Vitamin D3 is produced in your body – but not in sufficient quantities

Even though we spent a lot of time outdoors in the sun-drenched autumn, applying creams with a high sun protection factor, as well as taking sea buckthorn fruit pulp oil orally as a natural sunscreen, have already become a habit. And rightly so – the risk of damaging your skin through excessive UV exposure should not be underestimated. However, this also severely restricts the skin’s vitamin D synthesis capacity. Studies show, for example, that a sun protection factor of 20 already blocks 95% of the UV-B radiation essential for this purpose.

A sunbath of up to 15 minutes when the sun is at the right angle would be sufficient for the body’s daily vitamin D production. However, our lifestyle makes this possible only to a limited extent. We usually spend our working day indoors – and, for most people, during times of day when the sun’s position would be ideal for vitamin D production in the skin. Spending the lunch break in the sun is not always possible, which is why additional vitamin D intake is recommended not only during the winter months, but also in summer.

Corona: Vitamin D levels indicate mortality risk

In addition, a German study establishes a connection between vitamin D deficiency and severe courses of Covid-19.  Accordingly, one of the most important strategies in the coronavirus epidemic is to identify severe courses of Covid-19 at an early stage, before they become acute. Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, severe obesity and high blood pressure – these underlying conditions increase the risk of a severe course. All of these conditions have one thing in common: they are often associated with a low vitamin D level.

The same applies to older people, who also frequently suffer from vitamin D deficiency and belong to the risk groups. Hans-Konrad Biesalski from the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart now points to this connection. The nutritional medicine specialist evaluated 30 studies and identified a vitamin D deficiency as a possible indicator of the severity and mortality of a Covid-19 illness.

Among other things, vitamin D regulates the immune system and the so-called renin-angiotensin system (RAS), which is particularly important for regulating blood pressure. In the event of an infection, vitamin D ensures that these two systems do not get out of control. “Because the coronavirus attacks an important switching point in these regulatory circuits, pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory processes are no longer balanced,” explains Biesalski. “The system becomes disrupted – especially when a vitamin D deficiency is present at the same time.”

Vitamin D is not a medication

To avoid misunderstandings, Biesalski emphasizes: “Vitamin D is not a medication that can cure Covid-19. However, it can have a positive effect on the course of the illness by enabling the organism to restore the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory processes.”

According to Biesalski, it is difficult to achieve a sufficient vitamin D level through food alone. As a preventive measure, however, people should spend plenty of time outdoors, pay attention to their diet – and, at the latest when an infection is suspected, ask their doctor to check their vitamin D level.” (red, Deutsches Gesundheitsportal, 19.7.2020) – taken from the daily newspaper DerStandard, 19.07.2020.
