All-round protection – with organic sea buckthorn pulp oil

Our cells are constantly exposed to particularly aggressive molecules known as free radicals. They are produced continuously during metabolic processes and are further intensified, for example, by environmental toxins such as car exhaust fumes, ozone, pesticides, excessive sunbathing, smoking, stress factors and preservatives.

The process of cell damage caused by free radicals can be explained as follows. In “classical” oxygen, atoms are surrounded by paired electrons, whereas an oxygen radical has unpaired electrons and therefore combines very easily with other vital components of the body’s cells. These are oxidized in the process, meaning that electrons are released, thereby damaging cells, cell membranes and cell nuclei.

The first signs of such exposure to free radicals may include fatigue, depressive moods or nervousness. Lack of drive and exhaustion increase. An excess of free radicals considerably worsens the general condition, weakens the immune system, impairs the vascular system and accelerates the ageing process.

In the sea buckthorn fruit, vitamin C occurs in combination with a whole range of antioxidants and the so-called bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids are important protective substances found mainly directly beneath the skin of the fruit. Plants use these protective substances to defend themselves against diseases, viruses, fungi, bacteria and environmental damage. They also give sea buckthorn its vibrant colour.

Antioxidant vitamin E

In addition to water-soluble vitamin C, the fat-soluble vitamin carotene, as well as vitamin E, is found in sea buckthorn fruit. Vitamin E is a collective term for a range of substances, including tocopherols and their subgroups alpha, beta, gamma and delta. Based on the recommended daily intake of 20–30 mg, the biological activity of alpha-tocopherol in sea buckthorn oil, at 184.4 mg/100 g (literature), is exceptionally high. In addition, the high vitamin E content protects the valuable unsaturated fatty acids in foods and in sea buckthorn oil from attack by aggressive oxygen radicals and prevents them from oxidizing, i.e. becoming rancid. A similar process takes place in the human organism: here, too, tocopherols protect the lipids in cells and tissues from oxidation, thereby slowing down the ageing process. Vitamin E promotes the elasticity of connective tissue and increases the moisture content and enzyme activity of the skin. The enzyme SOD (superoxide dismutase), in particular, reduces the harmful effects of UV radiation.

If vitamin E is taken for more than 10 days, the light-protection function of sunscreen increases, meaning that significantly fewer skin cells are damaged in strong sunlight. If vitamin E is taken regularly for longer than 10 days, the body converts it into alpha-tocopherols. When vitamin E is consumed in the body as a free-radical scavenger, vitamin C is again needed to replenish the reserve. Vitamin E is also necessary for regulating fat metabolism.
