Nourishing, protective & revitalizing – the effects of sea buckthorn on the skin

The sea buckthorn pulp oil contained in sea buckthorn juice is used very successfully in cosmetics, especially in skincare, because it contains many active ingredients that protect the skin against sun-induced UV radiation and dryness. Sea buckthorn pulp oil has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and strengthens the immune system and the body’s defenses. It can be used in skincare not only in acute cases, but also preventively..

Important note: When applied to the skin, sea buckthorn pulp oil is used in highly diluted form because of its strong coloring effect. In natural cosmetics, it is referred to as an active ingredient oil, which is used in small quantities, usually mixed with a fatty carrier oil such as almond or jojoba oil, or in an oil-in-water emulsion. In terms of its effect on the skin and mucous membranes, as well as its fatty acid profile, it is not comparable to sea buckthorn seed oil, which, when used regularly, significantly reduces pigment disorders, commonly referred to as “age spots” (Latin: Lenthigines, seniles, Lentigines solares). Both sea buckthorn oils are components of the NATRUE-certified organic and natural cosmetics range.

What are the most important areas of application for sea buckthorn pulp oil?

As explained in our information article on sea buckthorn oil, it provides many active ingredients when used both internally and externally. Our SANDICCA organic sea buckthorn pulp oil contains large quantities of fat-soluble vitamins and can thus support the entire organism. It provides valuable support for the care of stressed and irritated skin, for pre- and aftercare during chemotherapy or radiotherapy and for protecting the skin from sun damage.

Preventive effect – sun protection & moisture

Healthy skin benefits from care with sea buckthorn pulp oil, as it stimulates blood circulation, which promotes cell metabolism and the formation of new skin cells.

It is also excellent for use as sun protection:

Thanks to the carotenoids it contains (beta-carotene as a precursor to provitamin A), sea buckthorn pulp oil is ideal for preventing cell damage caused by excessive sun exposure. The vitamin E it contains increases the skin’s ability to retain moisture and protects against premature skin aging caused by UV rays or harmful environmental influences, such as smog, tobacco smoke, exhaust fumes, etc. In addition, the sun protection factor of the sunscreen product is increased if vitamin E is taken for 30 days before sunbathing. It has a sun protection factor of 3–4.

Internal use as sun protection: Before the first sunbath in spring, take a 30–40-day course of sea buckthorn pulp oil, 1–2 teaspoons spread throughout the day. Ideally, take the oil directly—also mixed into yogurt or muesli. Repeat in autumn/winter before extended hikes or days of skiing.

External use as sun protection – recipe:

  • 100 ml sesame oil (virgin)
  • 40 drops sea buckthorn pulp oil
  • 5 drops essential oil (lavender)

Important note: Sea buckthorn pulp oil does not replace textile sun protection or suitable sunscreen. However, when used internally and externally, it supports the skin in preventing sun-related skin damage.

Skincare and skin repair application:

Sea buckthorn pulp oil helps the skin retain moisture and strengthens its elasticity, partly because it contains carotenoids as a natural precursor to provitamin A. In the skin, a vitamin A deficiency, for example, leads to dryness, wrinkle formation and “withering.” Thus, sea buckthorn oil counteracts the formation of fine lines and premature skin aging when used in skincare.

Recipe for a facial care oil:

  • 5 ml jojoba oil
  • 2 drops sea buckthorn pulp oil
  • 5 ml sea buckthorn seed oil
  • 2 drops lavandin
  • 1 drop rose geranium
  • 1 drop immortelle
  • 1 drop frankincense

Dry and irritated skin – how sea buckthorn pulp oil heals

Redness, irritation and itching are signs of skin that is too dry. This is not only unpleasant; it also makes the skin more susceptible to harmful environmental influences. Sea buckthorn helps build a natural protective barrier. Palmitic acid is partly responsible for this, as it supports the formation of the skin barrier.

Brittle, dry and irritated skin of all ages benefits from the regenerative effect of sea buckthorn pulp oil, for example as an ingredient in a facial care oil.

For an itchy scalp and dandruff irritation is relieved and dandruff formation reduced by a care oil (50 ml almond oil, 15 drops sea buckthorn pulp oil).

As after-sun care sea buckthorn pulp oil can be used as a nourishing body oil or mixed into a natural cosmetics cream.

Recipe for a body care oil for normal skin:

  • 100 ml base oil (almond or jojoba oil)
  • 40 drops sea buckthorn pulp oil
  • 5 drops essential oil (such as bergamot, rosemary, rosewood or mandarin)

Sea buckthorn pulp oil for wound care and skin conditions

If the skin is affected by conditions or wounds, sea buckthorn pulp oil supports the healing process and the restoration of the natural skin barrier.

For burns and insect bites: Pure application – cool the affected areas of skin thoroughly beforehand, then drizzle with pure sea buckthorn pulp oil and allow it to absorb. CAUTION: stains heavily. Its effect is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.

Wound healing: Sea buckthorn pulp oil promotes wound healing in abrasions, crush injuries, bruises, ulcers and abscesses, and helps with scar treatment as a scar oil – e.g. with 100 ml St. John’s wort oil, 40 drops sea buckthorn pulp oil and 20 drops essential oil. It also helps with pressure sores (decubitus).

Skin conditions: When used for skin hardening, psoriasis and eczema, the regenerative, protective and nourishing effects of sea buckthorn pulp oil come to the fore. A care oil can be prepared, for example, from 100 ml almond or jojoba oil and 40 drops sea buckthorn pulp oil; essential oil should not be added in cases of skin inflammation.
