Our story began in 2013 with a dream. We had just truly fallen in love with sea buckthorn and wanted to be the first to cultivate this valuable plant in Austria. With our organic sea buckthorn gardens in Styria’s Joglland region, we actually turned this plan into reality. Today, one thing matters most to us: that you feel completely at ease with our sea buckthorn products.

Sustainability is what drives us. That is why we are committed to cultivating sea buckthorn in Styria. For years, we at Sandicca have been putting this commitment into practice with our own Sandicca sea buckthorn gardens, and we also invite interested farmers to cultivate sea buckthorn for us. A step that requires a great deal of energy, especially in the initial phase, but which – and we at Sandicca are convinced of this – will be reflected in the high quality of the products and the development of the region.

From Styria’s Joglland region to the Danube-Auen, Lake Neusiedl and Jessen on the Schwarze Elster
The gently mountainous Joglland region in northeastern Styria, already described by Peter Rosegger in Waldheimat, is home to the SANDICCA sea buckthorn gardens, covering around 2 hectares at an altitude of 840 metres. Three key factors guarantee the quality of the sea buckthorn cultivated there: the geological nature of the sandy primordial rock soil, the many hours of sunshine that allow the valuable secondary plant compounds to ripen, and the sufficiently cold nights during the summer months, which give the sea buckthorn its high vitamin C content and its characteristic fruity aroma. Optimal precipitation conditions and nature-oriented manual work in the SANDICCA sea buckthorn gardens also contribute to the flourishing of this unique crop. SANDICCA sea buckthorn gardens can now be found throughout Austria in areas near the Donau-Auen and Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel national parks. We have also been delighted since 2025 to have a partnership with our SANDICCA farmer in Jessen (Elster), an idyllic small town on the Schwarze Elster in Germany. In addition to the sea buckthorn variety cultivated especially for SANDICCA, they all share one thing: a passion for the orange superfood.
Pioneering achievement in Austrian sea buckthorn cultivation
SANDICCA has the first sea buckthorn gardens in Austria. Around 5,500 sea buckthorn plants thrive in a unique location. We use two varieties that adapted well, as two-year-old, small shrubs, to the sunny yet harsh mountain climate of Joglland. Thanks to a high proportion of male plants, which are necessary for the berries to ripen on the female plants, our sea buckthorn thrives optimally.
Sea buckthorn is considered a pioneer plant. Its creativity in dealing with adversity, its initiative and zest for life, as well as its ability to assert itself against the forces of nature, are the characteristics that shape us at SANDICCA as Austrian pioneers in sea buckthorn cultivation and that we have adopted from the sea buckthorn plant.
