Sea buckthorn works – boost immune defense and well-being
Sea buckthorn oils and their effects – discover the elixir of life, sea buckthorn oil
Unlike many other fruits and berries, both the seeds and the pulp of sea buckthorn contain fats and oils. There are therefore two types of sea buckthorn oil: sea buckthorn pulp oil and sea buckthorn seed oil. There are various methods for extracting them.
Sea buckthorn pulp oil is thin and fluid, has a vibrant orange-red color, and is distinguished by its typical pure sea buckthorn aroma and taste. The equally thin, yellow-red sea buckthorn seed oil is obtained by pressing the seeds separated from the pulp. It lacks the characteristic sea buckthorn aroma.
Selected ingredients of sea buckthorn oil
Due to its omega-3 fatty acids, highly unsaturated sea buckthorn seed oil can be considered a plant-based substitute for fish oil. Its chemical composition is similar to that of linseed oil, while its flavor is delicate and nutty.

Effects & application – how to get the most out of sea buckthorn oil
Sea buckthorn pulp oil has an anti-inflammatory, soothing, antiseptic, and antioxidant effect. Its main areas of application are:
- Protecting the skin from sun damage
- Caring for sun-stressed skin
- Pre- and aftercare during chemotherapy or radiation therapy
- Protecting skin cells from free radicals
- Caring for itchy and flaky scalps
- Supporting youthful problem skin
When applied externally, sea buckthorn pulp oil is highly diluted due to its strong coloring properties. Ideally, dilute it with a carrier oil such as almond or jojoba oil. Only a few drops are needed; a ratio of 1:10 is ideal (1 part sea buckthorn pulp oil to 10 parts carrier oil).
How does the specific application work? Here are two detailed examples for you: one for external use (as sun protection and after-sun care) and one for ingestion (to protect cells from free radicals).
How does sea buckthorn pulp oil work as sun protection and after-sun care?
The vitamin E contained in sea buckthorn pulp oil promotes increased moisture retention and protection against premature skin aging caused by UV rays or harmful environmental influences, such as smog, tobacco smoke, exhaust fumes, etc. It also increases the sun protection factor of the sunscreen product if vitamin E is taken for 30 days before sunbathing. It has a sun protection factor of 3 to 4.
Important note: Sea buckthorn pulp oil does not replace textile sun protection or suitable sunscreen. However, when used internally and externally, it supports the skin against sun-related damage.
- Internal use as sun protection: Before the first sunbathing session in spring, take an SFF oil course lasting 30–40 days, with 1–2 teaspoons distributed throughout the day. Ideally, take the oil directly – also in yogurt or muesli. Repeat in autumn/winter before extended hikes or days of skiing.
- External use as sun protection: Good absorption of UV rays, providing natural skin protection. Recipe: 100 ml unrefined sesame oil, 40 drops of SFF oil, 5 drops of essential oil
- External use as after-sun care: Use as a nourishing skin oil or mix into a natural skincare cream. Recipe for normal skin: 100 ml base oil (almond or jojoba oil), 40 drops of SFF oil, 5 drops of essential oil
Sea buckthorn pulp oil for protecting cells from free radicals
The carotenoids and vitamin E contained in the oil, in particular, help keep free radicals away from the cell membrane. This helps prevent damage and promotes the skin’s resilience.
The flavonoids contained in the oil bind with harmful agents and render them harmless. They also activate the immune system and prevent bacteria and viruses from attaching to cell membranes.
In addition, the vitamin A contained in SFF oil is a component of visual purple in the retina of the eye. A vitamin A deficiency can therefore quickly lead to reduced visual acuity with light sensitivity and possibly impaired color perception.
Application: When consumed as a dietary supplement, SFF oil acts as a natural free-radical scavenger. Consuming 2 teaspoons per day (14 ml) provides 85% of the daily vitamin E requirement and thus protects cells from oxidative stress.
Smokers should generally not take pure vitamin A or beta-carotene supplements, as the antioxidant effect of these substances can lead to the formation of additional carcinogenic substances from tobacco smoke or tar, which may significantly increase the risk of lung cancer.
Comprehensive protection against free radicals is only achieved through the interaction of vitamins A, C, and E.
Smokers are therefore advised to take SFF oil daily in combination with Bio Sea Buckthorn Freshness Elixir +C. This also covers smokers’ increased vitamin C requirements.
Important information on storage and consumption
Among oils, sea buckthorn pulp oil is the most stable and the least susceptible to oxidation. It therefore remains fresh for a long time and retains its excellent qualities over extended periods. Unlike sea buckthorn pulp oil, sea buckthorn seed oil is less stable in storage and oxidizes very easily. For this reason, once the bottle has been opened for the first time, it should be used within a few weeks when stored in the refrigerator. This is due to its high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids and high omega-3 fatty acid content, which means the pure oil can also be consumed as a natural dietary supplement.
